Useful Tips for Getting Rid of the Worst Rug Stains
Are you worried about that stain on the new rug that you bought for your living room? Not every rug stain is created equally, so the way you remove the stains will not be the same. When it comes to the most difficult stains, we would like to share with you some useful tips so you can deal with the worst of the worst ones.
Coffee and Red Wine Stains
These two beverages are two of the most common stains that occur on rugs and carpets. They are also usually considered to be the worst of the worst as both of these beverages are highly acidic and have thick, dark colors. This makes them almost impossible to remove if they are not immediately noticed when the spilling occurs.
If you manage to see the stain occur, or see the rug is still wet, pour either club soda or water over the affected area and blot the stain up with a cloth. Do not rub the stain or grind it into the rug, instead blot it up until it is not there anymore. If the stain is still there once the carpet is dry, use baking soda paste in combination with cold water or borax to help remove it.
Candle Wax Stains
Candle wax can efficiently work its way into the fibers of your carpet and create a slippery, oily mess. If the wax is still hot when it is spilled, take caution when cleaning it up. Use an ice pack or ice cube to freeze whatever is left over. Once frozen, the wax will clump together, and it should be easy to pick the majority of it out of the rug.
Motor Oil Stains
Hopefully, you do not have too many motor oil spills getting on your rug. However, in case that motor oil or any other type of oil does manage to stain your rug, begin by blotting up the stain as much as possible.
Then, use shaving cream on the stain and place the cream on a toothbrush (or any kind of brush depending on the size of the stain). Make sure that you work the shaving cream into the stain by thoroughly scrubbing it. Although for most stains, you may want to avoid rubbing to prevent further contamination, the oil in these products allows them to spread quickly into the fibers of the rug. Thus you may want to make sure as much shaving cream as possible is worked into the stain.
Also, make sure that the shaving cream you use does not have any added moisturizers because they can add more oil to the rug.
Ink Stains
Pens may go haywire at any time, resulting in the spreading of ink on your floor. Ink stains are very hard to remove from the carpets. They can destroy the carpet if they are not cleaned thoroughly. To remove the ballpoint ink stains from carpet, buy two cans of cheap lacquer hair spray. Spray the hairspray onto the ink stain which will soften the ink. Then use a white cloth towel for blotting the lacquer. Do not scrub the stain; rather repeat this process until the ink stain disappears. Once the area becomes dry, hand-brush the area and then vacuum it. This should cause the removal of any traces of lacquer.
Pet Stains
Byproducts of pets can leave stains on your clean carpets. For removing such stains, soak up as much liquid as possible with towels or newspaper. Then wash the affected area with cold water and dry it again. Then follow up with a store-bought cleaner or odor neutralizer. But even when this is done, some stains may require extra effort.
Avoid use of any removal tools which can heat the carpet, as they will only set the stain. Get the affected area wet. Then spray an enzymatic cleaner on the spot. Allow it to sit overnight, then soak up the liquid with paper towels.
Blood Stains
Blood may fall on your carpet from the wound of your family member or friend. To remove the blood stain, dab it with a solution of one tablespoon of hand dishwashing liquid and two cups of cold water. Once you have done this, absorb the liquid with a dry clot. Repeat this till the stain is gone.
If you are still not seeing the desired results, you should dampen the remaining stain with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. (Before doing so, perform a spot check to ensure it does not lighten your carpet.) Leave the hydrogen peroxide on the spot for about an hour, then dab at it with a cloth. Repeat it many times till the stain disappears.
Kool-Aid Stains
As Kool-Aid is full of colored dye, this can be a very tough carpet stain to remove. Blot the Kool-Aid stain with a paper towel or dry towel. Avoid rubbing the stain as this will make it worse. Drop ¼ cup of white vinegar and a tablespoon of dish soap in a spray bottle and fit with cold water. Spray the stained area with a mist and allow it to soak for 5-10 minutes. Then blot again with a dry towel or paper towel. Repeat this several times till the stain is gone.
Chocolate Stains
To remove chocolate stains from your carpet, first, use a dull knife for scraping off any solid remaining chocolate residue. Do this carefully, the more chocolate you can remove in this way, the better it is as any chocolate left on your carpet can make the stain worse. Then, by using a clean cloth or paper towel, take a half teaspoon of laundry detergent and mix it with a cup of water which is at room temperature.
Spray or pour a little bit of detergent and water mixture directly onto the stain. Then blot the stain. Start working from the outer edge of the stain towards the middle of it. Doing it in this way ensures you are not spreading the chocolate stain from the center outwards. Do this several times if required.
You may want to consult a professional carpet cleaner for more serious stains. The type of rug will determine how aggressive you have to be to remove the stain and whether or not outside help is required.
